The slow cooker is a staple in most kitchens. It’s perfect for both those who don’t enjoy cooking and those who do but struggle to find the time to cook an entire meal after a full day of work. In fact, nearly everyone can benefit from using a crockpot at some point. That’s why so many people have them (or have more than one).

Slow cookers are so beloved, in part because you can just toss ingredients in and walk away. It will cook away, and when you return, your food will be ready for you to serve and enjoy. You save time and can avoid eating takeout every night.

This versatile kitchen gadget is not just for cooking meals while you work or do other things. They can also be used to make a staple ingredient for cannabis chefs: cannabis oil.

What Is Cannabis Oil? What Is Cannabis Oil Used For?

Cannabis oil has many other names, including canna-oil, cannaboil, and even weed oil. It is simply the fusion of cannabis and an oil of your choosing. Cannabis oil can be made using any type of oil, from coconut oil to vegetable oil and even avocado oil.

The compounds found in cannabis are fat-soluble, so they need another agent to bond to so the body can absorb and process them. Oil is the perfect bonding agent for cannabis.

A cannabis-infused oil has many uses. It can be used to:

  • Bake desserts. Sub in cannabis oil for simple oil in a recipe.
  • Fry eggs. By making your eggs in cannabis oil, you’ll start the day off with a high.
  • In salad dressing to spice up your lunchtime or dinnertime starter.

Cannabis users who cook with weed will find having pre-made cannabis oil on hand to be quite beneficial. They can quickly pull it out of the fridge when they are ready to start cooking, saving them time in the long run.

Why Use a Crockpot to Make Cannabis Oil?

Crockpots are convenient not just for cooking food but also for making cannabis oil. Essentially, you can put in what you need and walk away from it. But there are other reasons people may choose to make their own cannabis oil and use a slow cooker to accomplish it.

Other infusion methods can be much more complicated than making cannabis oil with a slow cooker. Its simplicity is one of its biggest draws.

You also have complete control over the process. When you make your own cannabis oil, you can choose the strain infused into the oil, the type of oil, and even the potency of your oil. This level of control allows you to make the oil that is perfect for whatever your next baking project is.

Choosing Your Oil

As we’ve mentioned, you can use any type of oil you want to make cannabis oil. So, which should you start with?

As you choose the oil to use as your bonding agent for canna-oil, you’ll need to think about what you plan to make with it. Coconut oil will solidify and is ideal for use when making pie crusts or other baked items. Vegetable or avocado oil, on the other hand, would be ideal if you plan to use your oil in stir-fries.

In addition to taking the consistency and use of your oil into account, think about the flavour as well. Most oils have little to no flavour, but some can be relatively potent. Keep the flavour in mind as you think about what cannabis plant to use when you make your cannabis oil.

How to Make Cannabis Oil in a Slow Cooker (Hint: It’s Easy)

The first step in making your own cannabis oil is to gather up your ingredients and equipment. You will need:

  • 1 cup of ground, decarboxylated cannabis flower
  • 1 cup of cooking oil (your choice)
  • 1 slow cooker
  • Storage container
  • Cheesecloth
  • Strainer
  • Spoon

Once you’ve gathered up everything you need, it’s time to make your oil. Follow these steps:

  1. Pour your oil into your slow cooker.
  2. Add your decarboxylated cannabis and stir them together.
  3. Place the cover on top and let it cook on the lowest setting for about three hours.
  4. Turn off the heat and allow your mixture to cool.
  5. If desired, repeat the heating process to create a more potent fusing.
  6. Place your cheesecloth in your strainer and put your storage container under it to collect the oil.
  7. Carefully pour your mixture into the cheesecloth-covered strainer. The cloth will keep the leaves out while allowing the oil to drain through the cloth and strainer and into your storage container.

Making cannabis oil in your slow cooker is a stinky process; your home will smell. Because of this, make sure you make your cannabis oil in a cannabis-friendly environment and when young people are not around.

You can store your newly created cannabis oil in the refrigerator for about three months. Freezing is not recommended, and don’t let it sit for longer than the allowed three months in storage.

A Note on Decarboxylation

A Note on Decarboxylation

You’ll notice our recipe calls for decarboxylated cannabis. This refers to the process of heating up the cannabis so that THC and CBD convert into the right forms to give users effects.

Though your cannabis will heat up while it cooks in your crockpot, the pot won’t get hot enough to properly decarboxylate your cannabis. So, you will need to take this step separately beforehand, or if possible, find weed that has already been through the process.

Final Thoughts

Using a slow cooker to make cannabis oil is quickly becoming popular thanks to its hands-off approach. You can easily continue to work on a project while the cannabis and oil mixture simmers.

Making your own oil allows you to create oil that is as potent as you desire and use the strains and oils you prefer.
