The Different Types Of Magic Mushrooms

You can find almost 200 different types of magic mushrooms growing in the wild. These types of shrooms thrive all over the world, and each one offers distinct features. Most shrooms types contain one of three chemical compounds, either psilocybin, psilocin, or baeocystin. 

These compounds create the famous psychedelic effects which magic mushrooms are known for. You can discover a range of magic mushroom types worldwide, but not every variety is safe for humans to enjoy. Let’s learn more about the kinds of magic mushrooms, including how to find a variety that’s right for you.

Magic Mushroom Chemicals

You can figure out how potent a mushroom is by examining the chemical compound it contains. For example, psilocybin and psilocin are very similar compounds, as their names might imply. 

When you consume psilocybin, psilocin is created as a byproduct. This reaction is what creates the psychedelic effects. Baeocystin goes through a similar process. 

The various compounds work together to create a shroom’s overall effect. More might sound better, but all three compounds can create a dangerous effect.

One way to distinguish between different types of psilocybin mushrooms and their chemical compounds is to look at the spores. For example, Brown-purple or rust-brown spores contain psilocybin. Blue-black spores, on the other hand, contain psilocin. 

There are many different types of shrooms, and it can be hard to ID a specimen just by looking at it. Here is a list of some of the most popular types of shrooms.

Psilocybe Cubensis or Golden Caps

Of all the shrooms types sold in online dispensaries, Golden Caps are the most popular. These magic mushroom types are very hardy and grow well throughout the seasons. You’ll often find Golden Caps growing on manure or compost. Young shrooms have a bell-shaped appearance and cinnamon-tinted brown colour before developing their characteristic golden colouring.

Psilocybe Azurescens or Flying Saucer

 More resilient and hardy types of magic mushrooms, Flying Saucers usually grow in wooded areas with sandy soil. These mushrooms have brown or caramel colouring combined with cone-shaped caps. Spores are purple-brown or purple-black.Psilocybe Tampanensis 

One of the wild types of psilocybin mushrooms, this variety grows in natural areas. Look for convex-shaped caps. Young specimens are brown and mature mushrooms are white-gray. Spores are purple-brown.

Psilocybe Stuntzii or Blue Rangers

Like some different types of shrooms, Blue Rangers love landscaping. You can find these growing in clusters near new lawns, paths, and gardens. Young Blue Rangers are olive-green, and despite their name, they turn yellow-brown as they grow. Spores will be purple or gray-brown.

Psilocybe Caerulescens or Derrumbes, Landslide Mushrooms

 Landslide mushrooms get their names because they grow well in low temperatures and high altitudes, such as you might find on a mountain. These shrooms do best in areas with frequent landslides. This variety is one of the types of shrooms with a low potency, making them an excellent choice for beginners. Landslide Mushrooms are silver-blue and have a metallic tint.

Psilocybe Cyanscens or Wavy Caps

 Another of the different types of shrooms, Wavy Caps, grow well in areas with lots of rotting wood or sawdust. Look for them on lawns, gardens, or hiking paths. Their caps tend to have a wavy texture. Young Wavy Caps are chestnut brown, and they turn dark yellow with age.

Psilocybe Mexicana or Pajaritos

This variety is one of the types of shrooms the Aztecs used for ceremonies. This traditional strain grows well in meadows, forests, moss, and anywhere with rich soil.

Psilocybe Bohemia or The Bohemian

Of all the different types of shrooms, The Bohemian is one of the pickiest. These shrooms do best near Alnus, Picease, and Betula trees. Young mushrooms have conical caps which turn to dark brown, convex shapes with age. Spores are gray and purple with a brown tint.

Psilocybe Caerulipes or the Blue Foot

A Blue Foot is one of the rarest and most interesting of the different types of shrooms around. This variety grows on the same spot for years, ideally near new hardwood debris. Look for a blue band or foot near the base of their stems.
